SUBJUNCTIVE

Subjunctive is a verb form that express a wish that doesn’t/didn’t happen or contrary to the fact. Subjunctive can be divided into: PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE AND PAST SUBJUNCTIVE.
Subjunctive is usually preceeded by: if only (seandainya saja), wish (berharap), would rather (lebih suka), as if/as though (sepertinya/ seolah-olah).
Example          :
A.    Present Subjunctive
SUBJECT + VERB 2
FACT (SUBJECT + VERB 1)
Harapannya menggunakan bentuk dari Past tense (Verb 2) tetapi faktanya menggunakan bentuk dari Present Tense (Verb 1). Jika harapan + maka faktanya – atau sebaliknya.
If only I were a businessman.
I’m not a businessman. I am a teacher.
I wish that I met a my favorit teacher.
I don’t meet him.
I wish I could not come.
I come.
Example:
1.      If only I were rich, but I’m not rich.
2.      I wish I knew her hobby, but I don’t know.
3.      She isn’t at home, but I wish she was.
4.      She talks as if she knew everything, but she doesn’t know everything.
5.      Tasya would rather Desi arrived in here, but Desi doesn’t arrive in here.
6.      I wish it was very cold here, but it isn’t very cold.
7.      Simon wishes he finished his homework, but he doesn’t finish it.
8.      I wish I drove my car, but I don’t drive my car.
9.      That woman wishes she acted her perform, but she doesn’t act in her perform.
10.  They looked at me as if I was mad, but I am not mad.

B.     Past Subjunctive
SUBJECT + HAD + VERB 3
FACT (SUBJECT  + VERB 2)
Harapannya menggunakan bentuk dari Past Perfect tense (Had + Verb 3) tetapi faktanya menggunakan bentuk dari Past Tense (Verb 2). Jika harapan + maka faktanya – atau sebaliknya.
He looks tired as if he had worked hard.
He did not work hard.
Sia wished that she had not come late again.
She came late again.
Example:
1.      Ann sounded as if he had worried, but he did not worry.
2.      He looks as if he had needed a good rest, but he did not need a good rest.
3.      She was not busy but she behaved as if she had been busy.
4.      It smells as though someone had been smoking here but it hadn’t someone smoking here.
5.      He hadn’t studied for the test. I wish he had studied well for it.
6.      He had never went to Bali. He wish he had gone to Bali.
7.      Sara had walked with difficulty. She looked as if she had hurt her leg.
8.      Peter was extremely hungry and he had ate very quickly. He ate as if he had not eaten for a week.
9.      Cakra had not written the letter, I wish he had wrote the letter.
10.  I wish I had spoken English frequently, but I had not spoke English frequently.
